Lake Łebsko is one of those places that's hard to describe in a single word. Located just beyond the coastal dunes, in the heart of Słowiński National Park, it offers a unique blend of wildlife, history, and an ever-changing landscape.
This is one of Poland's largest lakes, captivating not only with its vast expanse of water, but above all with its dynamics, as nature here never stands still. Lake Łebsko is located in northern Poland, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, within the Słowiński National Park, just a few kilometers east of Łeba. Separated from the Baltic Sea by a narrow strip of dunes, it is one of the most picturesque and dynamic places on the Polish coast. On the west side, the lake borders the town of Łeba, and on the east, it borders small settlements such as Kluki and Izbica – former fishing villages with a rich history. The Łeba River flows through the lake, connecting it with the Baltic Sea, influencing its character and ecosystem.
Łebsko - one of the largest lakes in the country
Lake Łebsko is the largest coastal lake in Poland and the third largest in the country (after Lake Śniardwy and Lake Mamry). With a surface area of approximately 70 km² and a length exceeding 16 kilometers, it impresses with its vast, open space and enhances the feeling of being close to the sea. The lake's average depth is only about 1.6 meters (maximum depth is about 6.3 meters), making it relatively shallow and highly susceptible to wind and water level fluctuations.
A characteristic feature of Łebsko is its slightly brackish nature. During strong storms, Baltic waters can enter the lake via the Łeba River, which connects it to the sea. This creates unique natural conditions, favoring the occurrence of both freshwater and marine fish species. This unique blend of influences makes the lake a valuable and exceptionally interesting ecosystem, one of the most important elements of the Słowiński National Park.
A lake in constant motion
The most fascinating feature of Lake Łebsko is its changing landscape. The shifting sand dunes of the Słowiński National Park have a huge impact on the area's appearance, shifting by up to several meters annually. The most famous of them, Łącka Góra, reaches a height of over 40 meters and is one of the region's most recognizable landmarks. The shifting masses of sand gradually bury the forests, alter the lake's shoreline , and serve as a reminder of the power of nature that constantly shapes this area. Changes also occur within the lake itself. Fluctuating water levels, sediment deposits from the Łeba River, and the impact of storms cause its shores and shape to slowly but noticeably change. This means that each visit to Łebsko can be completely different each time.
Traces of history and lost settlements
The lake area was once inhabited by the Slovincians – a people with Kashubian roots who for centuries led a life based on fishing and agriculture. Their heritage can still be discovered in the open-air museum in Kluki, which is well worth a visit. Traditional cottages and everyday tools have been preserved here. One of the most moving stories associated with the lake is the fate of the village of Łączka and other settlements, which were eventually abandoned or buried by the shifting dunes. Although their remains are difficult to find today, local legends and stories remind us of the people who had to give way to the forces of nature.
Kingdom of birds and wildlife
Łebsko is a true paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers. The lake is one of Poland's most important breeding and stopover areas for migratory birds. White-tailed eagles, grey herons, cormorants, terns, and numerous species of ducks and geese can be seen here. During migration periods, the sky above the lake transforms into a spectacular spectacle, attracting ornithologists from all over Europe. The rich fauna is complemented by a diverse range of fish – zander, pike, perch, and eel can be found in the lake's waters. In the past, fishing was the mainstay of the local community's livelihood, and the characteristic flat-bottomed boats, called pomeranki, allowed navigation in the lake's shallow waters.

Łebsko delights visitors year-round. In spring, it attracts visitors with its awakening nature and returning birds; in summer, it offers expansive panoramas and proximity to the sea; in autumn, it captivates with its tranquility and spectacular sunsets; and in winter, when the water partially freezes, transforming into a stark, almost fairytale landscape.
